The State Filing Finder.

Every state has one official office where you check your business name and file your LLC. Pick your state and this takes you there.

Fees are not listed here on purpose. They change. The official page always has the current number. Read it there, write it in your checklist, and never pay a company that mails you.

Where will you form the LLC?

Your home state, unless your CPA told you something different. If you live outside the US, ask in the community before you pick one.

1Open the official page. Look for “name search” or “business search” and check nobody already has your name.

2Find the LLC filing fee on that same site and write it in your checklist. Do not trust a number from anywhere else.

3File there yourself, or give the name and the state to your filing service and let them do it.

Where you file

Pick a state on the left.

If the link does not open the right page, the state moved it. Search for “[your state] LLC filing Secretary of State” and only use a result that ends in .gov. Anything else is a company charging you to do a free form.

What this tool is doing

It is a list of links, nothing more. Every US state, plus DC, has one official office where you file an LLC. In most states it is the Secretary of State. In a few it is a different department, and the tool tells you when that is the case so you do not get confused by the name.

Why there are no fees on this page. Filing fees change, sometimes every year, and a wrong number costs you a rejected filing. The official page always has the current fee. Read it there and write it in your checklist.

Filing service or do it yourself? Either way, check the name on the official site first. A filing service (the one we use is Northwest Registered Agent) files the same form for you, acts as your registered agent so your home address stays off the public record, and reminds you about the yearly filing.
